Glidden Paint: A Rewind

The manufacturing company name for this paint is called as the Glidden, Brackett & Company. It is a Cleveland based company and was found in the year 1875 by three people named Mr.Francis Harrington Glidden, Mr.Levi Rackeet and Mr.Thomas Bolles. This company was initially concentrating on varnish production. Later they diversified their business into the chemicals and also foodstuff production. Mr.Akzo Nobel is now the owner of this brand name “Glidden”.

During the period of varnish production by this company it touched around 1000 gallons per week. The delivery of this product was done mainly through wagons and horses. As years passed by, the partners of this company retired and hence the name of the company faced many changes till 1894. It caught the name of Glidden Varnish Company in the year 1894. At this juncture, Mr.Glidden gave employment to 19 persons in this factory and started manufacturing various industrial products like furniture, carriages, pianos and wagons.

To capture the home market, this company introduced a colour varnish called Jap-A-Lac in the year 1895. This brand became a well known brand in the year 1903 after gaining a good market share with a spending of about $60000 towards advertising for this product.

Mr.Glidden took off from the business at his age of 85 after a public sale of the company which turned to Adrian D Joyce and his associates. Mr.Joyce became the president of the Glidden Company in the 1917 when it was integrated. He stayed in that position for a period up to 1950, after which the company was took over by his son Mr.Dwight P.Joyce.

Within the first two years after the take over of the company by Mr.Adrian from Glidden, the company oversaw the establishment of more than ten paint and the varnish companies throughout the country. Some of the paint companies that were established during this period were Cambell Paint & Varnish Co., Heath & Milligan Manufacturing Co., Twin City Varnish Co., and so many in the line.

In 1920s, the Glidden Company ran with the acquirement of pigment and chemical companies. In the year 1921, Mr.Glidden formed a company called Chemical & Pigment Co., which became a subsidiary of Euston Lead Co. purchased during 1924. After adding another two companies to the crown, Mr.Glidden formed California Zinc Company in 1927.
