Differences between latex paints and oil based paints
Paints which are used for the interiors are basically divided into two kinds they are the oil based ones and the water based latex paints. Normally many of us would use oil based paints for the high traffic areas, trim and door and latex paints would be used for the walls.
Latex paints are easier to apply and could be diluted easily that they can be applied on larger areas. The rollers and brushes which are stained with latex paint can be washed and cleaned easily. But oil based paints are difficult for application on the walls and hence are mostly used for the doors and trims in particular to give that extra sheen and gloss.
Both latex paints and oil based paints are not only used for the interiors but also for the exteriors but the important factors which requires consideration when using them for exteriors are its resistance against tear, wear and fluctuating weather conditions.
Oil paints have very good adhesion and penetrating power but the latex paints might not provide the desired level of adhesion especially on the chalking surface.
The choice of paint mainly depends on the area, type of finish required and purpose of painting. The type of end result expected and the amount of money to be spent for painting also depends on the choice of paint. Basic knowledge about paints and their properties are required to select the right kind of paint to get desired results.
