Automotive Painting: The Types of Coating
Purchase of a car requires heavy amount and the person who intends to purchase the same, apart from looking into the shape will mind about the exterior finish. The superiority and the sturdiness of the finish is just a mirror image of the durability and the quality of the vehicle itself. Nowadays, wide variety of effects and colours are available and the finish gives the opportunity to customize and refresh the vehicles at a very low rate, but at the same time, maintaining the durability and quality to preserve and maintain the value of the vehicle.
The types of coating that has to be implemented for a vehicle are clear coat, primer, powder coat, base coat and electro coat.
Let us now discuss some points about electro coat. A light truck or a metal frame of a car in general has a tremendous complex shape. Major areas of the same are hidden thus the direct sight is obstructed. Under these circumstances, it will be extremely difficult to paint this complex shape with the conventional spray paint. Hence, to cover the entire area and to prevent the corrosion, this first layer of electro coat is implemented. This is called as electrode position. To start with, the metal body of the vehicle has to be charged electrically. Then the same has to be dipped in a bath that contains oppositely charged particles of paint. Now, these paint particles will get attracted to the metal surface and get neutralized and after which it can be baked into a tough, coherent film. The present practice of cathode minimizes the corrosion in the vehicle. This type of coating is called as cathodic electro coats.
The products of electro coat should show signs of high throw power and also superb corrosion confrontation. These products should be applicable on all the substrates like steel, zinc coated steel, aluminum alloy etc, that are used in the automotive industry. The requirements of baking must be well-matched with the different needs of the customers. The products should also provide a soft appearance. A new ecological requirement should ensure that the electro coats are functioning without add on of heavy metals like lead or tin.
The DuPont electro coat products give complete line of coat in the DuPont Automotive systems that include tin and lead free coatings. The new ideas that are implemented are HAPS-free system which looks into the field of edge protection, improved throwing power, low bake and also weather durability.
